Home Match Recaps
August 29, 2024 – The Buchholz High School boys' golf team commenced their 2024 season this evening, competing against Keystone and Crystal River in a home match at Ironwood Golf Course. Play was competitive, going back-and-forth and resulting in a tie of points between Buchholz and Crystal River. Sophomore four-seed Dharish Kalaisenthil had a standout game, delivering a steady performance to finish three strokes over par with a score of 39. Coach Ryan McNickle praised Kalaisenthil’s play, saying he was extremely happy with his progression from his freshman season, calling him ‘super talented’. He also noted that Dharish’s performance was a testament to how hard he worked over the off-season and into the summer. The team will gear up to play against Ocala Forest and Eastside at Ironwood next Tuesday at 4PM.

September 3, 2024 – The Bobcats didn’t let the gloomy weather on Tuesday stop them from dominating in their home match, securing a score of 150 against Eastside (263) and Ocala Forest (161). The team struggled on hole two but kept their composure to finish strong. Senior Jace Jenkins, who shot a 39 (+3), talked through the mental aspect of the match, sharing, “I kinda lost it on two after a bad tee shot, but my dad tells me to always stay in it, never really give up.” Jenkins has his sights set on a state championship appearance and high placement for the team this year, noting that the team is comfortable with the regionals course and has the potential to play well. Coach Ryan McNickle praised the team for bouncing back after big numbers early in the match, including junior Ashton Washington, who hit four birdies. McNickle is optimistic about performance going forward, remarking, “..if we can play this way going forward, we’re going to be able to go pretty far.” Looking ahead to Wednesday’s match against Crystal River, McNickle noted that he’ll be more vocal while the Bobcats play in their first away contest, coaching the boys about details like what clubs to use and shots to hit off the tee. Buchholz will travel to Plantation Inn and Golf Resort tomorrow to take on the Pirates at 3:30PM.

September 10, 2024 – Coming off of two canceled away matches, the Bobcats made a statement back on their home turf at Ironwood Golf Course, winning with a score of 159 over P.K. Yonge (177) and Branford (194). Junior Ryder Robinson had the stand-out performance of the match, hitting one over par for a final score of 37. Despite on-and-off rain and solid wind for most of the afternoon, the team maintained their focus and pulled off a decisive victory as the only team with multiple scores under 40. The Bobcats are staying in Gainesville this week, hosting Santa Fe and Gainesville High School at Ironwood on Thursday at 3:30PM. The Bobcats were previously scheduled to play against the Santa Fe Raiders last month, but the match was cut short due to inclement weather.

September 12, 2024 – Buchholz came up just short in their matchup against Santa Fe (165) and Gainesville High (205) on Thursday, with a team score of 166 not enough to beat out Santa Fe. The Bobcats faced difficult weather in the second half of the match, with wind and rain creating frustrating conditions. Coach Ryan McNickle talked about the team’s performance, noting that the group is drained from multiple away matches and cancelations: “I think a lot of it has been a lot of matches in a row with not a ton of time to practice, and the weather not being great. It’s a little bit of fatigue I think, with constant matches and not a ton of time to work on stuff.” He added, “I think a little bit of a reset will be good for them, not having to worry about coming out here and grinding when it’s raining two or three times in a week will be good for them.” Junior Ashton Washington had a solid performance, but indicated that he’s set on cleaning his game up in the future, commenting, “I’m looking to cut my putts down and just thinking smarter around the course, making sure I leave it on the right side of the hole because I’ve played it a lot now.” Washington has confidence that the team can make it to the state meet if they can block out distractions in the coming weeks: “We just need everyone’s mind, body and soul to be in the right place at the right time.” The team will play next on September 19th, competing on home territory at Ironwood Golf Course against Eastside High School at 4PM.

September 24, 2024 -- The Bobcats had a dominant victory in today’s competition, winning against Keystone Heights and Gainesville High. In what was the team’s last match at Ironwood Golf Course for the season, Buchholz scored a total of 162 over Keystone’s 190 and Gainesville’s 209. Coach Ryan McNickle is encouraged by the team’s performance as they near the end of the regular season, remarking that in the past the team “has been a lot more up and down” around this time of year, whereas now he says their play is “..a lot more consistent. That means if someone plays really well one day and everyone kind of plays how they normally do then we can go pretty low. I’m pretty encouraged.” Coach McNickle called the match “bittersweet”, adding that the team is excited to spend time on some different courses after countless hours out at Ironwood. Senior Jace Jenkins tied for the lowest score of the match with a 39 (+3), and opened up about his feelings on his last match at Ironwood. “It all set in on my last hole. I didn’t really realize that was our last match at Ironwood, and it kind of feels weird not coming out here again, playing a match. Four years, coming out here to practice or play a match every Tuesday and Thursday, you’re out here so much. I have such a good feel for the course.” Jenkins is optimistic with where the team stands going forward, remarking that the team is “..picking things up pretty quick. I think we’re going to go into districts and regionals pretty strong which I’m super excited about.”
