• Alachua County Public Schools COVID-19 Testing

Through a partnership with the Alachua County Health Department, Alachua County Public Schools are able to offer COVID-19 testing for students and staff who have symptoms of COVID-19, as well as students and staff who are may have been exposed to the virus.

Students and staff will only be tested if they have a signed consent form, which can be printed and returned to your school: COVID-19 Testing Consent Form.

Testing for Students or Staff with Symptoms

      • The BinaxNOW COVID–19 Ag Card is a rapid antigen test that can detect an active COVID-19 infection in about 15 minutes, and does not require any additional tools, machines, or resources to process. These tests are intended to quickly identify individuals with infections to initiate isolation for the sick individual and quarantine for others who may have been exposed.

A student or staff member with symptoms of COVID-19 on campus, who has a signed consent form will be offered the rapid BinaxNOW COVID test.

COVID-19 symptoms (not associated with previously diagnosed conditions) include the following: fever or chills, cough, nasal congestion or runny nose, a new loss of taste or smell, shortness of breath or difficulty breathing, diarrhea or vomiting, stomachache, tiredness, headache, and muscle or body aches.

If there is a negative rapid test result, they will be sent home until their symptoms have improved AND they have remained fever-free for at least 24 hours without fever-reducing medications.

If there is an inconclusive rapid test result, the nurse will repeat the test. If the test is still inconclusive, the nurse will offer to perform a PCR test for confirmation. The student/employee must isolate at home while the PCR test is sent for lab processing.

If the employee has a positive rapid test result, the school will follow the protocols for Positive Employee Cases, which includes the quarantine of unvaccinated close contacts and household members. The nurse will also offer to perform a PCR test for confirmation. The student/employee must isolate at home while the PCR test is sent for lab processing.`

      Testing for Close Contacts

      • The Alachua County Health Department will offer COVID-19 testing to any staff or student who is a close contact with someone testing positive. Close contacts include any person who:

        • was within 6 feet of someone with COVID-19 for a total of 15 minutes or more in a 24-hour period.
        • lives in the same household as someone with COVID-19.
        • had direct exposure to respiratory droplets from a person with COVID-19 (sharing utensils, etc.)

Typically, a close contact may end quarantine and return to work/school after 14 days if they did not develop symptoms.

The Health Department will also offer COVID-19 on Day 9 of quarantine. A close contact may return early if a COVID-19 test performed on Day 9 or later is negative AND no symptoms were reported during quarantine.  Students or employees who live in the same household as someone testing positive may not shorten their quarantine and must quarantine for the full 14-day period.

If a close contact has recovered from COVID-19 in the past 90 days, they do not need to quarantine if ALL of the following are true:

        • Their illness was laboratory-confirmed in the past 90 days.
        • They have fully recovered.
        • They do not have any new symptoms of COVID-19.

If a close contact has completed COVID-19 vaccination (two doses in a two-dose series or one dose in a one-dose series), they do not need to quarantine if ALL of the following are true:

        • The COVID-19 exposure was at least 14 days after their vaccination series was fully completed.
        • They do not have any new symptoms of COVID-19.

Review all of the Protocols for COVID-19 Symptoms and Cases for more information.
