Classifications of students:
Students are promoted to the next grade level classification based on credits.
In order to be classified as a 10th grader, one must have at least 4 credits.
To be on track for graduation, one should have at least 6 credits
In order to be classified as an 11th grader, one must have at least 10 credits.
To be on track for graduation, one should have at least 12 credits.
In order to be classified as a 12th grader, one must have at least 16 credits.
To be on track for graduation, one should have at least 18 credits.
Florida High School Graduation Requirements
The School Board of Alachua County awards one of the following credentials upon successful completion of the requirements:
Standard Diploma requires completion of all course and credit requirements totaling 24 credits, a cumulative grade point average of 2.0 on a 4.0 unweighted scale, and demonstrated mastery of State Department of Education approved Minimum Student Performance Standards measured by the Florida Comprehensive Achievement Test (FCAT) for the Classes of 2015 and 2016. All other classes MUST pass the Florida Standards Assessment in 10th grade for the ELA (English Language Arts) Exam.
All students MUST demonstrate mastery on the State End of Course Exam in Algebra I. All students MUST take the State End of Course Exams in Geometry, Biology and U.S. History. Each test accounts for 30% of the final grade in the course. During the summer of 2017, the state passed legislation removing the State End of Course Exam for Algebra 2, previously designated as 30% of the course grade.
Students can earn a Scholar Designation by earning a Level 3 or higher on all EOC Exams, Passing the State Common Core Exams in 10th and 11th grades and taking at least one AP, IB, or Dual Enrollment Course. Additionally, they must successfully take Algebra 2 and pass the FSA Math Assessment. They are required to take one higher level math course, like Statistics, and one higher level science such as Physics, Chemistry, or a choice of AP classes.
Certificate of Completion can be awarded upon completion of all courses, credits, and the required 2.0 grade point average while not meeting the testing requirements.
Special Diploma, available only to students classified under specific categories in Exceptional Student Education (ESE), requires completion of 24 credits and a cumulative grade point average of 2.0 on a 4.0 scale without meeting the testing requirements. This diploma can be used for certificate programs and to obtain a job. It cannot be used for entrance into college or the military.
Special Certificate of Completion requires completion of all special diploma courses and credit requirements without meeting the testing requirement. This certificate is only used in extreme cases of not fulfilling all Special Diploma requirements and aging out of school.
