NATIONAL JUNIOR HONOR SOCIETY: NJHS is open by invitation to students with a GPA of 3.5 or higher. The group completes service projects in order to develop leadership skills.
SCIENCE FAIR: Westwood’s Science Fair is expansive with over 300 finished projects. Westwood students participate at regional and state competitions.
MU ALHPA THETA: The MU Alpha Theta team has placed among the top three in the regional middle and high school competitions. Students work with high school student volunteers to refine and advance their higher math skills and achievement.
MATH COUNTS TEAM: The Math Counts Team has placed first in the North Central Florida region and has participated in the state competitions.
JAZZ BAND: Led by the 2006 Alachua County Teacher of the Year, our award winning jazz band has been recognized at local, state and national competitions.
DEBATE TEAM: The Speech and Debate team continues to dominate and win awards at a local tournament against high school students.
MANGA CLUB: Students of all grades meet to create artwork in this popular Japanese style. Guest speakers and field trips enhance the experience of this popular club.
POSITIVE BEHAVIOR SUPPORT (PBS): PBS is a school wide, positive reinforcement program that “catches” and rewards students for positive behavior. In addition to a school store where token “WHIRLONES” may be redeemed, there are regularly scheduled events for students doing the right thing.
BUILDER’S CLUB: Westwood’s student government is represented in BUILDER’S CLUB. This civic-oriented organization made up of elected 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students conduct community service throughout the school year including fundraising, food drives, and service work.
NEWS CREW: Westwood’s WHIRLED News morning show has received awards in the Jim Harbin Video Competition.
GRADE LEVEL RECOGNITION: Panther Pride - Sixth Grade Teachers recognize students who have demonstrated academic excellence with an ice cream social. Hall of Fame - Seventh Grade Teachers recognize students for their accomplishments or academic abilities six times a year in a ceremony. Eagle All Stars – Eighth Grade Teachers recognize students who have demonstrated academic excellence, improvement or good citizenship each nine weeks with a pizza lunch.
FIELD TRIPS: Students in all grade levels experience learning in the community while participating in a variety of field trips. From the Hippodrome Theater to Physics Day at Busch Gardens, our students have many opportunities to continue their education off-campus.
EXTENDED DAY ENRICHMENT PROGRAM - EDEP is a supervised after-school enrichment program offering activities including sports, cooking and tutoring sessions.
21ST CENTURY AFTERSCHOOL PROGRAM - 21st Century is a supervised afterschool program with opportunities for academic enrichment, personal enrichment, and other activities designed to complement the members of actively participating students through educational and personal development opportunities.
WESTSIDE PARK: Access to the park affords our students many academic and reward opportunities. From the pool to the Hoggetowne Creek, you will find our classes using these resources every week.
SPORTS - No other middle school waves as many championship banners as Westwood. Come join our winning basketball, soccer and volleyball championship tradition.
