Curriculum Corner:
At W.W. Irby Elementary School academics are a top priority. All the curriculum is based on Florida's adoption of the B.E.S.T (Benchmarks for Excellent Student Thinking) Standards.B.E.S.T. Standards in English Language Arts (ELA) are addressed through Benchmark Education, the district adopted core reading program. There is a 90 minute uninterrupted block set aside daily for reading instruction. Literacy stations, guided reading, direct instruction and small group instruction are methods used to deliver instruction. In addition, social studies is incorporated into the ELA program using Florida Social Studies by Gallopade.
The State Standards for Science are taught through the use of Florida Science and Math instruction uses Florida Go Math, both through Houghton Mifflin Harcourt. Our teachers use engaging and creative instruction to enhance all subject areas for students.
Also, as part of the students’ day, students receive instruction in co-curricular areas which include Art, Music, P.E., Media STEAM and Technology classes throughout the week.
