Curriculum Overview

  • The faculty and staff at Lawton Chiles Elementary are committed to providing a challenging and enriching educational program with a well-rounded curriculum that meets the needs of all levels of learners.  Our curriculum is based on the Florida’s Next Generation Sunshine State Standards (Common Core).

    Reading
Florida's State Standards in reading are addressed through Reading Street from Scott Foresman, the district adopted core reading program for elementary students. Teachers supplement this program with Scientific Research Associates, Inc. (SRA), Reading Mastery, Early Interventions in Reading, and other children's literature. A 90 minute uninterrupted block is set aside each day to address reading instruction. Literacy centers, guided reading, direct instruction and small group instruction are methods used to deliver reading instruction in the classrooms.

    Math
My Math from McGraw-Hill serves as the basis for our math program. Calendar Math is used as a supplement.

    Science
State Standards in Science are addressed through the use of the Florida Science material by Houghton-Mifflin.

    Social Studies
Florida Social Studies by McGraw-Hill provides the core for our social studies program.

Our Enrichment program focuses on providing a more rigorous curriculum as outlined by the grade specific NGSSS, and also on developing students’ critical thinking skills.

Students with an Individualized Education Program (IEP) are provided a continuum of services through our Exceptional Student Education program. We strive to provide the most appropriate setting that meets the unique needs of each individual student.
