Positive Behavior Support at Kanapaha Recognized as Being One of the Best in the State!

Kanapaha is a Positive Behavior Support (PBS) school.  Through this program, we focus our efforts on teaching high expectations of good behavior as well as looking at the function of student behavior.  In the classroom, if a student doesn’t understand a lesson, that lesson is retaught.  When it comes down to behavior, we have most often looked at strictly punishing bad behavior.  PBS takes the approach that good behavior must be taught, recognized, and rewarded.  The ultimate goal of this program is to increase academic performance, increase safety, and decrease problem behaviors through a positive school culture with high expectations.  One aspect of this program is the Kanapaha Kash that your students may have shown you.  These rewards are given out by teachers and staff in recognition of behavior exhibited by the student.  Students are then able to use their Kanapaha Kash to buy items during lunch or to buy tickets to PBS events at the school. 

Through this initiative, we have seen a decrease in behavior incidents at the school and countless improvements in our academic and behavior metrics.  Because of this strong effort, we were awarded the Gold-Level Model School status for the 2014-2015 year.  This is a highly prestigious award given to schools that have implemented PBS within their school to the highest level.  Every year we continue to monitor our behavior and discipline policies.   We have been awarded a Silver and Bronze Medal over the last few years as well.

We partner each year with various groups for mentoring including Take Stock in Children and Wyldlife Community Group.
