ESOL

  • Westwood Middle School is proud to serve as the center program for students in the ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) program. Our ESOL students receive intensive English and reading instruction in a separate class where oral communication is stressed.  Students then attend regular classes with other students, allowing them to meet many different children. Our whole school is committed to providing rigorous academics, promoting community involvement, and delivering quality services to all students including English Language Learners and their families.

Gloria Schwartz is our Family Liaison Specialist for the ESOL - Immigrant Program in Alachua COunty Public Schools. Her job is to assist the families of our students as they adapt to their school and community. Some of the services she provides include:

    • Helping parents communicate with the school regarding issues such as academics, attendance, extracurricular involvement, and behavior
    • Interpreting/translating or finding volunteer interpreters/translators when possible
    • Assisting families in obtaining information and access to school and community agency resources
    • Performing home visits as needed
    • Developing parent programs

Gloria can be reached by phone at 352-955-6707, ext. 5492 or e-mail schwartzgv@(gm.sbac.edu).

Busing Information

  • ESOL transportation is provided to all ESOL students attending Westwood. Transportation requests can take up to 3 days for bus assignments. Students that are not zoned for Westwood can take from 5-7 days to get a bus due to bus routes. Transportation works very hard to find the safest bus stop for our students and can not always accommodate front door pick up.
Once a bus has been assigned, the student will receive 4 copies of the request.
First being the AM bus number, time of pick up and location. Second is for the PM bus number and drop off time. Locations are normally both the same.
Third copy is for student to keep with them in their planner for reference and fourth and final copy is for parent to have knowledge of transportation.
Front office keeps a copy on file as well.

If your child is not picked up, please call Transportation Dispatch at 352-955-7750 with concerns. You do not need to call Westwood, as the school has no authority over busing and routes.
