School Board of Alachua County
-
The Alachua County school system is governed by a five-member board with members serving staggered, four-year terms. Board members are elected at-large from five geographic districts in nonpartisan elections, and all represent the entire county. The Board members select a chair and a vice-chair, both of whom serve one-year terms.
The School Board of Alachua County has legal authority over the operation of all public schools in the district within the framework established by the state legislature and the Florida Department of Education. The Board is also responsible for the hiring of a superintendent to oversee the day-to-day operations of the district.
Regular business meetings of the School Board of Alachua County are held on the first and third Tuesdays of each month at 6 p.m. in the Boardroom at the District Office, 620 East University Avenue. There are opportunities for citizen input at these meetings. Agendas are available on the district's website 7 days prior to the Tuesday board meeting. All meetings are open to the public in accordance with the Florida Government in the Sunshine law.
